Description

In responseto the opportunity for increased public awareness and education to help the Tampa Bay region deal with theeffects of a three year drought and increased demands on water supplies, theHillsborough County Water Department implemented a program known asthe Senior Water Resource Training program (SWRT). The overall goal of the Hillsborough County SWRT program was to recruit, train, and sustain a group of senior citizens to be water resource educators fortheir communities, thereby using an experienced and influential segment of society to engagewith their peers and the public about important water resource issues. The first offering ofSWRT in Hillsborough County consisted of eight half-day sessions offered over four consecutiveweeks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Animportant partner in the program was a local retirement complex, which offered meeting space aswell as transportation for the field trips, which were open to all residents of the complex. The paper discusses weekly assignments, guest speakers, field trips, a program evaluation, focus group research, and sample questions from an attitude survey. Includes table.
